What is Metabot?
Metabot is an Open-Source legged robot. It can be made with standard on-shelf electronics and parts, plus some 3D-printed elements.
All the 3D-schematics, electronics boards and the code is Open-Source.
This is intended to be a standard platform for hobbyists, research and education. You can easily change any part of its 3D design, like setting new dimensions, number of legs or adding new parts, but also its electronics, adding new sensors or actuators, and, of course, its software, creating new behaviours, gaits or any intelligence you can think of!
Making the robot yourself is quite easy, it requires to order some parts, mainly from Robotis.
The original Metabot contains 12 XL-320 actuators, which is the main component of the price. You’ll also have to buy its controller, the OpenCM9.04 (type B), and a battery. You’ll also have to print some 3D parts. On our printers, we can build a Metabot in about 12 hours of print time.
The total price of such a DIY-robot is about 330 EUR / 450 USD. Plus a few hours of assembling and printing, for sure!
Flexible parametric design
You can customize your robot really quickly, by editing the scad files, re-generate the parts and then 3D-print it!
A really good platform…
… For hobbyists: making your own robot is a really nice experience, because you learn a lot about electronics, mechanics and computing science. The really wide range-of-operation of this robot, and the great latitude offered by the all-open-source frees your imagination!
… For education: robotics is a really good cross-disciplinary subject, involving mechanics, electronics, mathematics and, of course, computing science. Dealing with operational objects that can move and have a physical existence is easier.
… For research: creating, learning and optimizing robot gaits, making robots interacts with each others or with humans… There is a lot of research domains requiring platform to do experiments. Metabot can fit a lot of these demands.
